It reads printed barcodes on products and labels, which covers ordinary shop stock. If you also need to scan codes shown on a customer's phone screen — digital vouchers, loyalty codes, QR codes — that needs the fixed 2D scanner at £99 instead, because a 1D laser cannot read a screen.
